Remington Model 17
Next up is the ever elusive Remington Model 17 made from 1921 to 1933. It is a pump action bottom loading/bottom ejecting 20 Gauge shotgun that was later developed into the Ithaca Model 37. This example shown here is an early 1922 production with a 28 inch modified choke barrel and is in excellent condition.
This patented John Browning design was given a design assist by a John Pedersen patent and who better to assist than the man responsible for the recently released Remington Model 10 which also had a bottom loading/ejecting action but of Pedersens own unique design. Browning was well known for praising Pedersen and his accomplishments, which were many, and for his fondness for his designs.
Come take a look as we examine these patents and many others attributed to this interesting hard to find Remington, take a close look at how it works, and shoot a couple of games of trap to see it in action.

Get ready for some research gang.....this one is elusive. What we have here is a Bay State single barrel, single shot, break action 12 gauge with a 2 3/4'' chamber and a 30'' full choke barrel. Bay State named shotguns were spread around like butter on warm pancakes back in the day so it took a bit to find out this was really a Harrington & Richardson department store brand dating from somewher...

Welcome to a visit with the Mossberg Model 352KB, a semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle that can fire short, long, or long rifle cartridges IF the magic adjustable magazine it was supplied with is still present as they are very elusive and hard to find intact. In 1956 Remington introduced the Model 58 shotgun affectionately known as the Sportsman 58, the first gas operated semi automatic shotgun that they ever made. A predecessor to the mighty 1100, the Sportsman 58, although flawed, set the stage for the success of the 1100 and brought Remington into the "modern" era of shotgun manufacturing. By 1963 the Model 58 was gone as the dominance in the mar...

You can imagine how it impacted sales of the competitors offerings. The example I have here is a 1985 production, 2 3/4'' 12 Gauge with a 30''...

    I picked up a 10-8 from AIM - they had 10-10's as well - the -8's sold out first and then the 10's like a day later - they were available for about a week. Yep. $379 (plus the transfer, shipping etc.) Mine is in better shape than yours - externally - bore is excellent and it's tight and mechanically vg as well. So I'm happy I picked it up.

    I have my Dad's 69A. It is a superb rifle from the word go. Extremely accurate with a very clean breaking trigger. No creep at all. The pull is a little bit on the heavy side but still very manageable. Since the receiver was not grooved for a scope, I took it to a gunsmith to get it done. He originally did not want to do it because it would kill the value of the rifle, I told him that this rifle would never leave my family so it's only value to us is sentimental. I put a 2.8-9 Simmons AETEC scope on it and it is one of my favorite rifles. I don't anyone makes a finer .22 bolt action rifle without it costing well over a grand.

    I just got a 1954 nickel plated one with steel frame. Beautiful gun and shoots great. The steel frame makes a big difference, for one thing it holds the barrel much tighter. Can’t push it out with just a finger. Have to actually push it loose against a wood workbench. Seems like the steel frame models are harder to find.

    I wish I had that book back in 1969 the first time I cleaned my 550-1.. It fired a couple thousand rounds perfectly until I oiled it.. then I had to do exploratory surgery..🥃😎👌

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage 5 днів тому

      Light oil is okay but this is not one to douse due to the nature of its function.....gas through small orifices and such. Keeping it spotlessly clean throughout the entire chamber area is very important with just a light coating of oil on the parts. Hope the surgery went alright!

    I’m in my late 50’s now and I never cared for the more modern Mini-14’s but the version I do like is the GB variant and I lucked out and found one 6 years ago at a local pawn shop so I snatched it up! As a retired Infantryman I prefer battle rifles in general so this was something I wanted to own in my collection. Mine is a 185 series so it’s a late 80’s production and it was a former Texas DPS prison rifle and in excellent condition, I doubt it was barely fired.

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage 5 днів тому

      Really? That bad? I think the trigger pull was engineered that way because it is a pocket pistol. AMT was certainly capable of making a softer trigger pull, they have many examples. I believe it was by design, so that being said, what else contributed it to being the "worst gun ever made"?

    Why do you think you shoot 20 ga. worse than 12? Has it been only with certain guns? One of my sons and I have shot skeet & sporting clays with a Beretta AL390 20 ga. and have done as well as we have with 12 ga. semiauto or a (rental) Krieghoff 12 ga O/U. I understand that in this case the gremlins in operating this example would have been very disconcerting...

    No need at all to feel bad for shooting a couple of 15's at 16yd trap with a 20 ga "field gun". Had you instead been shooting a shotgun with a higher-combed "trap" stock - one purposely designed for fast rising targets - no doubt, your scores would've at least been in the 20's that day. Most "Field stocks" typically shoot flat (50/50 pattern) and can quickly steal your lunch money from you on fast rising targets unless you remember to cover or completely block out your target .... especially on the straight aways. "Trap grade stocks" already have vertical lead designed into them (higher comb) so there's less need to completely "block out your target from view" while shooting at some of those fast-rising targets. Hopefully that makes sense. You probably would've seen some better results from the 20 yrd line and back with that particular gun ... and after the targets had already flattened out in their flight just a little bit. But out on the skeet range ... I think that old gun would show you a more pleasing personality (and with a better digestible shotshell, of course). Perhaps some Win AA's might be worth trying next?

    • @MilsurpGarage
